Delve Secrets to Working Remotely

Delve Secrets to Working Remotely

Recently, I worked remotely from a completely different continent on the other side of the world!

The second longest coastline in India was my office for two weeks this July. As there is a plethora of research outlining the benefits of adopting a hybrid/ remote working approach, this is swiftly becoming the new way of working in organisations across the world, including ours.

Here are a few Delve secrets to help you get started on embracing this change effectively:

Clear Guidance

It is vital that everyone has the same expectations regarding fair and inclusive hybrid working that is clearly outlined and regularly updated.

Beginning by clearly communicating your organisation’s strategic intent while mutually agreeing upon a set of hybrid working principles will instantly create a culture of autonomy that empowers your colleagues to manage their work pattern while also ensuring that everyone remains on the same page.

Communication

If you are working in a large organisation, it is a great idea to have a colleague’s reference group to disseminate clear messages and to provide support (technical or well-being) to your teams.

You also need to regularly review and evaluate your approach to hybrid working, so be sure to establish mechanisms for regular feedback e.g., pulse check surveys.

Equipment and IT Support

One of the biggest barriers to embracing a hybrid working approach is the anxiety and fear of using systems that may be unfamiliar to us.

This anxiety can be alleviated by understanding the challenges people face and the equipment needed to ensure equality of access and enablement of hybrid working.

You can support colleagues by proving them with adequate training on the digital tools to empower them even if they are working from miles away!

Collaboration and Networking

“Unless you consciously include, you will unconsciously exclude”

 – Stephen Frost

While working in a hybrid way, with some staff in the office and the rest working remotely, it can be so easy to jump on a call and dive straight into work. We often do not prioritise non-work conversations.

This can alienate people, so it is important to consciously construct time and space for non-work-related topics or team bonding. This is where you can get creative, get to know each other better and really have some fun together!

Learning and Development

As organisations adopt a hybrid working approach, it is vital that training and career progression opportunities for colleagues remain unaffected whether people are working remotely or in an office.

Ensuring you are investing in effective and inclusive talent management strategies will give you data-based evidence which can aid your decision-making process.
