Leadership in the new world: A fresh approach with Be Think Do
North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) has a great reputation for caring compassionately about its leaders and has invested significantly in leadership development in the last 10 years; an accredited CMI centre for leadership and coaching and a Gold Investor in People.
NWAS has experienced and is still facing a period of change where by both the essence and the speed of change are different from what has been experienced before. This more complex way of working is often referred to as VUCA; volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Financial and resource constraints are the ‘new norm’ therefore the nature of leadership and the work of the leader must change as well.
This highlighted a need to have a leadership framework that wasn’t tied to a salary or a position, a simplified framework relevant to all leaders within NWAS and the challenges unique to them, and a framework that would truly underpin all development activity under one familiar brand and identity.
Along with research on the latest thinking around leadership, Delve conducted a Trust wide ground-up diagnostic exercise with existing leaders and their employees, seeking views on what is required to future proof the organisation.
The Be Think Do model is the result of the emerging themes; how the people who work for NWAS want leaders to be, think and the most important things they should do. Delve shaped the model into a handbook with useful and visual prompts to guide leaders on a day to day basis and, in partnership with Hyperfine Media, an animation and an app for leaders to download which is updated with leadership CPD sessions, conferences and other events.
Delve kept the language accessible, the stories real, and the people interested and this then enabled us to connect all other leadership activity under the Be Think Do brand, including the shift required from their CMI programmes. Delve are now helping to identify the next generations of Be Think Do leaders by helping NWAS shape their talent management and leadership onboarding approach.
